The UNC Health Rex VolunTEEN Program gives teenagers the opportunity to contribute to the community while exploring a career in the medical environment. The program provides teenagers with practical experience and practice while developing good work habits. High school sophomores, juniors and seniors ages 14-18 may apply.
VolunTEEN assignments are based on information provided by teens during the interview process and may include areas such as patient care units, day care, the recovery room, office support assignments and more. Duties may include: Interacting with patients, rounding on patient’s rooms, assisting in discharges, restocking supplies, gift shop sales, delivering flowers and amenities, performing data entry and filing, assisting nursing staff with errands, greet patients and visitors to the hospital and help them find their destinations and many other duties. Teens whose parents work at UNC Health Rex will be assigned to separate areas to avoid placing parents in a supervisory role.
Students must be at least 14 years of age and have completed their freshman year of high school.
Program spans for eight weeks over the course of the summer (June-August).
Volunteer one day per week, Monday-Friday, for a morning or afternoon four-hour shift.
Must volunteer the first week of the program (June 23, 2025 – June 27, 2025 – assigned day only)
