The Legal Kid Foundation is a non-profit organization that is impelled to support children and their families. Our mission is to reduce the school-to-prison pipeline by educating and empowering children and their families in literacy, law, and mental health.
Offers:
Student Ambassador Program
Awaken young minds to be leading conscious citizens aware of the law, their own rights, respectful of the rights of others, and aware of the strength of their own voice.
Expand on young citizens’ legal literacy and comprehension of laws to use as key tools to resolve conflict.
Explore actual cases resulting from the typical legal issues kids go through when adjusting to diverse issues, inclusivity challenges, and legal understanding of inclusivity.
Educational Advocacy Program
Promote educational advocacy for parents that require assistance with educational policy and procedure.
Assistance with guiding parents through educational policy changes (ex. Implementation of student services in behavior and academics).
Develops recommendations that focus on helping children with disabilities get the resources they need to be successful as students in the general education environment.
Provides strategies for administrative staff, support staff and teachers informed about the challenges students with learning disabilities face and to help them navigate available services.
Provides parents with the information they need to participate in school board elections/meetings and navigate the processes involved in enrollment in schools or advocate for students with disabilities.
Mental Health Program
The Legal Kid Foundation proudly announces our partnership with Brinkley Brown Mental Wellness, based in the Raleigh-Durham area. Together, we are committed to addressing the critical role of mental health in the school-to-prison pipeline. We believe that mental health issues should not hinder a child’s education, leading to chronic absenteeism, lower academic achievement, and an increased risk of dropping out. We’re determined to break down the barriers that can push children into the criminal justice system. Through our partnership with Brinkley Brown Mental Wellness, we are taking concrete steps to break the school-to-prison pipeline through:

The Legal Kids Club characters will take children on a fun and interactive way in mastering literacy skills through downloadable reading tools, such as:
-sight word cards,
-decoding letter tiles,
-phonics workbooks, and
-reading comprehension books
