Saint Augustine's University Historic Chapel

Saint Augustine’s University, established in 1867, is a private, liberal arts college in Raleigh, N.C. With an average annual enrollment of approximately 1,500, the University offers 30 undergraduate degree programs in five academic divisions. Saint Augustine’s University is accredited by the Commission on Colleges of the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools. Saint Augustine’s College changed its name and status to Saint Augustine’s University effective August 1, 2012. In 2020, the University became the first historically black university to start a cycling team and, in 2022, the first to launch a women’s rowing team.

One of the oldest buildings now on the Saint Augustine's University campus, this Norman Gothic-style chapel was built in 1895. Students constructed the irregular T-shaped chapel of native granite under the direction of Rt. Rev. Henry Beard Delany (1858-1928), who later became the first African-American elected bishop in the Episcopal Church in N.C. It houses the bishop’s chair, an antique piece purchased in France as a memorial of Rt. Rev. Delany’s consecration.
