The Mawat District of the Boy Scouts of America (Durham County) annual Cub Scout Pinewood Derby.
Northgate is proud to host and sponsored the annual Pinewood Derby and the event is free and open to the viewing public. The Cub Scouts design and build their own cars using only a block of wood, four plastic wheels, and four nails and then races them in this annual contest. Originating in 1953, this competition is one of the most popular and best-known Cub Scouting events, even among the non-scouting sector. Hundreds of Cub Scouts are working hard to create a car to compete. After qualifying at the Pack-level, scouts are eligible to compete at this District-wide event in one of three categories: Fastest Car, Most Beautiful Car, or Most Original Design Car in two divisions. Each competitor receives a special commemorative patch and the winners in each of the divisions and categories are awarded a trophy provided by Northgate. The award divisions are Cub Scouts in the first grade (Tigers) and Cub Scouts (Wolf, Bear, and Webelos) in second through fifth grade. Cars progress from unfinished blocks to fantastic replicas of real cars and even quirky or unusual objects. Fun Fact: If a derby car was the size of a real automobile it would be traveling as fast as 200 mph! Media is invited to photograph and/or interview contestants, parents, and Scout leaders.
