SUMMARY:Great Southeast Pollinator Census at JC Raulston Arboretum
LOCATION:4415 Beryl Road, Raleigh, NC 27606
DESCRIPTION;ENCODING=QUOTED-PRINTABLE:North Carolina's pollinators need your help! All ages are welcome to parti
cipate!\n\nStarted by Becky Griffin, MPP pm, from University of Georgia Ext
ension, the Great Southeast Pollinator Census is a citizen science project
created to survey the population and diversity of pollinators in the Southe
ast.\n\nFor two days in August, Friday, August 21 and Saturday, August 22,
JCRA visitors can spend time in the gardens counting wasps, bees, flies, bu
tterflies and other insects to contribute to comprehensive data of our regi
on's pollinators. Once entered, this data will be displayed on the Great So
utheast Pollinator Census website and be used by researchers to spot trends
within pollinator populations.\n\nWhen should you come to participate?\nPa
rticipants can count at any time on August 21 and August 22. The JCRA will
be open 9 am to 7 pm on Friday and 8 am to 7 pm on Saturday. There will be
volunteers from 10 am to 12 pm both Friday and Saturday to help answer ques
tions and offer more guidance for collecting data.\n\nWhat do participants
do exactly?\nAfter picking up a tally sheet from the table at the Visitor C
enter, participants will find a plant in the garden with insect activity an
d count pollinator visits for 15 minutes. You are specifically looking for
what types of pollinators (wasps, flies, bees, butterflies, etc.) are visit
ing the plant you're watching and making a count of how many times a pollin
ator lands on the plant. Once the 15 minutes are over, return to the Visit
ors Center to drop off the tally sheet. Participants can do more than one p
lant but they need separate tally sheets for each plant.
