In 1709, English naturalist and explorer John Lawson described North Carolina as having “Plenty of Buffalos,” which are also called bison. But due to overhunting, they disappeared from the state by 1799, almost a century before they were wiped out in the American West, and they were not reintroduced until 1919. On National Bison Day, explore the natural history and ecology of NC’s buffalo and make a fun bison craft to take home. For all ages (adult accompaniment is required for all children); fee: FREE.
