Big Ed’s was founded in 1958 by Big Ed Watkins, a native of Wake County. His family’s farm produced tobacco and other crops. It is there that Big Ed developed the recipes used in his restaurants by helping his mother in the kitchen preparing meals for the farm workers. Big Ed’s opened in 1989 in the Downtown City Market in conjunction with the city of Raleigh’s revitalization project.
We are proud to call City Market home, where we continue the tradition of serving the best in Southern cooking. Join us for a Southern-style meal at breakfast or lunch, cooked to order using fresh and local products. Come in, kick back and look around at our museum of Southern culture - super cool for the kiddos!
